Water from air: what the humidity where you live actually allows

There is water in the air above your head right now, and how much depends almost entirely on where you are standing. In mid-July a cubic metre of New Orleans air carries 20.7 grams of it; the same cubic metre in Las Vegas carries 6.7. A gallon weighs 3,785 grams, so the same gallon means moving 183 cubic metres of Louisiana air or 565 of Nevada air. This page does that arithmetic for thirty cities, and tells you the hour of the day when your air is at its richest.

How much air a gallon costs where you live

Pick the closest city and the month. The tool converts the dew point and the temperature into grams of water per cubic metre of air, and then into the volume of air one gallon would take if every single gram could be captured. Nothing captures every gram, so read the result as the ceiling your climate sets, not as a yield.

Heat is not moisture, and relative humidity is a trap

Phoenix in July averages 95.7 degrees, warmer than Miami's 83.4. It is also drier than it sounds in a way that relative humidity hides, because relative humidity is a percentage of what the air could hold at that temperature, and hot air could hold a great deal. The number that does not lie is the dew point: Phoenix 54.7, Miami 73.6. Run both through the same arithmetic and a cubic metre of Miami air gives you 20.3 grams against Phoenix's 10.3. Twice the water, in cooler air.

The same trap works in reverse in winter. Anchorage in July holds 9.2 grams a cubic metre, not far off Phoenix, because cold air at high relative humidity is still nearly empty. And every city on the list except Honolulu and Miami loses most of its airborne water by January: Chicago falls from 14.1 grams to 2.7, Minneapolis from 13.6 to 1.9. Whatever the air can give you, it gives in summer.

Dew point is on every weather app, usually one tap behind the temperature. It is the single number to learn from this page.

What a cubic metre of your air holds

Mid-July first, because that is the best case, then the same city in mid-January. The last column is the volume of air one gallon would take in July with perfect capture, which no equipment achieves.

Three honest uses for this

Judge a claim. When anything promises gallons a day from the air, the figure above is the wall it has to live behind. Work out the air volume the claim implies, then ask what would have to move that much air, and how fast. A number can be impressive and still be inside the physics; the point is that you can now tell which is which, for your own postcode.

Pick your hour. If you are ever collecting condensate, from a dehumidifier or anything else, the early morning is when your air is richest almost everywhere in the country, and mid-afternoon is the worst. In a dry inland city that difference is a quarter of the yield for no extra cost.

Rank it against the cheap options. This chapter has already priced the alternatives: the rain barrel calculator shows a 500 square foot roof catching hundreds of gallons from a single inch of rain, and the household water plan counts what stored jugs cost. Air is the hardest place to get water from, which is exactly why it fascinates people. Do the easy things first.

Questions people ask

How much water is actually in the air?
In mid-July a cubic metre of New Orleans air carries about 20.7 grams and a cubic metre of Las Vegas air about 6.7. A gallon is 3,785 grams, so that is 183 cubic metres of air against 565 for the same gallon, before any machine's losses.
What is the best hour of the day to collect it?
Early morning, nearly everywhere. In 16 of the 30 cities here the air is richest between 7 and 9am and poorest in mid-afternoon. Inland the swing is wide: San Antonio goes from 19.9 grams a cubic metre at 7am to 15.5 at 5pm.
Does temperature or humidity matter more?
Dew point, which is the two of them together. Phoenix is hotter than Miami in July and holds half the water, because its dew point is 54.7 against Miami's 73.6. Relative humidity is a percentage of a moving target and will mislead you; dew point will not.
Do these numbers tell me what a machine will produce?
No, on purpose. They give the ceiling: the water the air contains if every gram were captured, which nothing does. Real equipment takes a fraction and spends electricity doing it. Use the figure to judge any claim against the climate it would have to work in.
Is water condensed from air safe to drink?
Not as collected, and this page makes no claim that it is. Condensate carries whatever the coil, the tank and the air carried. Treatment and testing are part viii of this chapter; until then treat any collected water as untreated.
