Water from air or a rain barrel: which one actually gives you more

Both promise water you did not have to buy. One of them costs nothing to run and stops working when it stops raining. The other runs on demand and costs more per gallon than bottled water in some states. The comparison below uses federal numbers for your own city, and it has an uncomfortable pattern in it.

The pattern: the machine is worst where the rain is scarcest

An atmospheric water generator is rated on air that holds 24.3 grams of water per cubic metre, the amount in air at 30 degrees Celsius and 80 per cent humidity. Real air in most of the country holds less than that, and the places with the least of it are deserts. Deserts are also where it does not rain. The technology that sounds like a desert answer is the one the desert starves.

The machine is taken at a rated 20 litres a day, 1,929 gallons a year, which every city on this list except the first two would fall short of.

Read the last two columns together. In New Orleans the roof beats the machine twenty nine times over. In Las Vegas, where you might expect the machine to justify itself, the roof still beats it about five times over, and the machine is working with air that holds barely a quarter of what its rating assumes.

Then there is the bill

Rain is free. Collecting it costs a barrel, a screen and a downspout diverter, once.

A machine rated at 20 litres a day, run all year, produces about 1,929 gallons. At the manufacturer figure of 400 watt hours per litre, that is 2,920 kilowatt hours a year. At the one long field measurement we could find, 2.25 kilowatt hours per litre published on 1 November 2022, it is 16,425 kilowatt hours a year.

At the US residential average of 18.34 cents per kilowatt hour, the EIA figure for June 2026 published on 26 August 2026, that is 536 dollars a year at the brochure figure and 3,012 dollars a year at the measured one, for less water than a modest roof gives away for nothing.

Where the barrel loses

This is not a one sided comparison, and the honest exceptions matter.

  • No roof and no downspout. An apartment cannot harvest rain. That is the machine's strongest case and it is a common one.
  • Rain that arrives all at once. A roof in a place with 40 inches a year does not give you a steady supply, it gives you floods and droughts, and the buffer between them is storage you have to buy and find space for.
  • Local rules. A few states still regulate rainwater collection, and some homeowner associations ban visible barrels. Our rainwater harvesting guide covers what to check before buying anything.
  • Drinking. Neither source is drinkable as collected. Roof water carries whatever is on the roof; machine water starts almost distilled and then grows bacteria in the tank if nothing keeps a disinfectant residual in it.

The order that actually makes sense

  1. Count what you already have. A tank water heater alone holds more drinking water than most people guess. Our blackout kit page counts it for your house.

  3. Catch the rain if you have a roof and the local rules allow it.
  4. Then, and only then, consider a machine, and only if your air is humid and your power is reliable.

The roof figures assume all the rain that lands on 1,500 square feet is caught, which no real system does. Gutters overflow, first flush is diverted, and storage fills. Treat the roof column as the ceiling, not the yield. That still leaves the comparison where it is.
